Prague embraces automated metro system

In a landmark decision heralding a new era of urban transportation, the City Council of Prague has given its approval to the automation of Prague’s metro system.

With a resolute focus on enhancing efficiency and meeting the evolving needs of its citizens, Prague is poised to move towards a fully automated metro network.

The proposal, aimed at automating both lines C and D of the Prague metro, received unanimous support from the City Council.

By synchronizing these two pivotal projects, Prague anticipates a myriad of benefits, chief among them being the substantial reduction in peak intervals and a notable increase in transport capacity along the bustling C line.

“The automation of line C and the concurrent modernization of our train fleet mark a pivotal moment in Prague’s transportation evolution,” remarked Marek Kopřiva, a member of the Prague Public Transit Company’s Board of Directors.

“We envision a seamless transition towards a unified metro system that not only optimizes operational efficiency but also elevates passenger experience to unprecedented heights.”

At the heart of this transformative initiative lies a commitment to leverage cutting-edge technology to streamline metro operations and enhance commuter satisfaction.

Through meticulous planning and strategic partnerships, Prague aims to introduce fully automated train operation systems equipped with state-of-the-art signalling technology, known as CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control).

“The introduction of CBTC signalling represents a quantum leap in metro operations,” explained Kopřiva.

“This groundbreaking technology enables precise train positioning and facilitates shorter peak intervals, laying the foundation for a more responsive and dynamic metro network.”

The comprehensive scope of the project encompasses not only the procurement of 69 fully automated trains but also the implementation of platform screen doors, depot infrastructure, and dispatching systems.

With an estimated investment exceeding Kč 86 billion (€3.46 billion), the initiative underscores Prague’s unwavering commitment to innovation and sustainable urban development.
