A new opinion poll has indicated that almost half of Germany no longer wanted to send either money or weapons to Ukraine.
According to the survey taken on February 24, a day after the German elections, by the opinion research institute Insa for news outlet t-online, 46 per cent of Germans want the country to stop giving aid to Ukraine.
Only 28 per cent of Germans supported continuing to provide both weapons and money to Ukraine.
In contrast, 7 per cent favoured helping the country with financial aid only, while another 8 per cent preferred supplying weapons exclusively.
Additionally, 6 per cent remain undecided and 3 per cent stated they were indifferent to the issue.
There was a significant age divide in the results, with 57 per cent of 18-to-29-year-olds opposing further support for Ukraine.
In contrast, only 28 per cent of those over 70 were against Germany continuing to send weapons or financial aid.
By gender, fifty-one per cent of women and 40 per cent of men supported ending aid to Ukraine.
Some 35 per cent of men favoured continuing to send weapons and financial support, compared to 22 per cent of women.
The split of opinion between East and West Germany was also marked. While 42 per cent of West Germans favoured ending assistance, this figure rose to 61 per cent in the East.
Political affiliation also appeared to influence people’s views.
Green Party voters stood out, with 72 per cent supporting continued military and financial aid — the highest level of support by far.
According to the survey, 45 per cent of Free Democratic Party voters and a third of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union voters share this view.
By contrast, a considerable majority of hard-right Alternative for Germany and hard-left BSW supporters — 79 per cent each — wanted to end support for Ukraine.
These findings contradicted an earlier survey by the Elections Research Group from early February 2025, t-online noted.
That survey found that 67 per cent of Germans still supported continuing military aid to Ukraine, with 27 per cent even advocating for increased military assistance.
The numbers cited in the press concerning the EU's military aid to Ukraine are very misleading, experts have told Brussels Signal. https://t.co/HvDBS3NYXL
