Germany’s Die Linke youth wing caught in anti-Semitism row

Linksjugend Frankfurt, the local chapter of the youth division of Germany’s hard left Die Linke, has been vilified after tweeting on X that Jewish teenagers expelled from a flight should have been thrown-out mid air.

The group was accused of anti-Semitism over the controversial tweet and they expelled the member whom they said was responsible for the tweet.

Die Linke’s youth organisation in Frankfurt had responded to an article by the outlet Jüdische Allgemeine of 52 Jewish youngsters, not older than 15 years, who had been expelled from an aeroplane in Valencia by the Spanish company Vueling amid accusations of disturbing the departure procedure and interrupting the security briefing of the cabin crew.

“Unfortunately, we have to disappoint: The throw-out did not take place while the plane was in the air,” the official account tweeted.

The organisation deleted the tweet and posted on August 18 instead: “A few days ago, anti-Semitic and dehumanising tweets were posted on our X account.”

It said it had already distanced itself from these in an initial reaction but added an extra reaction “for the sake of transparency”.

We would like to once again clearly distance ourselves from these statements. Hostility towards people is absolutely contrary to the principles of our policy. The posts were written by an individual, and the grassroots group unanimously opposes this individual opinion.

We deleted the posts immediately after they became known. The author was simultaneously removed from account access and suspended from the grassroots group.

“Meanwhile, she is no longer a member of the Frankfurt Left Youth. She was never a member of The Left Party.

Even though the author has faced consequences, the processing of this matter is not yet complete. We are currently revising our social media concept to ensure that such misuse by individuals acting alone is not even possible in the future,” the youth group stated..

In a conclusion it added: “We stand firmly resolved against all forms of anti-Semitism and for the protection of Jewish life.

The educational centre Anne Frank in Frankfurt was outraged by the initial tweet.

“In recent weeks, inhumane rhetoric has continued to intensify in the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict – the social media statements of the Linksjugend Frankfurt are a drastic example of how the last inhibitions fall,” said Meron Mendel, director of the educational institution.

Mendel described the controversial post on social media as “calling for the murder of Jewish children and young people”.

Christian Democratic Union youth organisation Junge Union Filder reacted: “We are speechless. This disgusting and antisemitic behaviour is not tolerable. The left-wing youth has a massive problem and has as much to do with the core values of our society as Putin has with pacifism. Disgusting.”

Earlier in August, the Berlin chapter of Die Linke organised a summer party where a speaker from the “United Palestinian National Committee”, reportedly close to Hamas, was invited to participate, German magazine Der Spiegel reported.

According to the Berlin Constitutional Protection Report of 2024  the “United Palestinian National Committee” is an umbrella organisation for joint events of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Hamas. Both groups participated in the terror attack Israel from October 7, 2023 with more than 1,200 deaths.

MPs with the Christian Democratic Union and Social Democratic Party had wanted to ban the summer party.

Parts of the youth league of Die Linke are classified and observed as left-wing extremist structures by some State offices of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
