Cecilia Strada, who was elected to the European Parliament in June, has spent her entire career as a humanitarian aid worker. In addition to war-torn countries such as Sudan and Afghanistan, she has worked on board NGO rescue vessels in the Mediterranean. In this interview she tells Justin Stares why she believes Europe should welcome both asylum-seekers and economic migrants, and why in her opinion all talk of an immigrant ‘invasion’ is misplaced. The conversation also tackles the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
