There is “absolutely no evidence” of Russian interference in Romania’s annulled 2024 elections.
That is according to MP Elena Lasconi, the Liberal candidate who trailed frontrunner Călin Georgescu in the highly controversial ballot.
Her comments came in an interview marking the one-year anniversary of the controversial annulment in December 6, 2024, cast fresh doubt on the intelligence assessments that prompted the Romanian Constitutional Court’s unprecedented decision to scrap the entire electoral process.
Conducted by French-Romanian journalist Stéphane Luçon and published on December 2 on his Substack platform Francezul, the discussion titled A Year Since They Suspended Democracy delved into what Lasconi described as a manufactured crisis that eroded public trust in Romania’s institutions.
“We will never know, they will never publicly disclose the real reason why the 2024 election was cancelled, it is in their interest to hide it,” she said.
“There is absolutely no evidence of Russian interference in the elections in Romania,” added Lasconi, now President of the Save Romania Union party.
“I can imagine influences coming from any other part of the world, but I haven’t seen any Russian influence.
“The system changed the rules, it changed the candidates because it was very important to make sure a puppet becomes president.
“After the first round, I was contacted by these forces of the system. I was offered … to be appointed head of the intelligence services — which I refused,” she added.
“They are the direct beneficiaries of this bad play that is the cancellation of the elections.
“I have a lot of information that may seem insignificant but if we connect it, a coherent picture appears in connection with the cancellation of the elections.

Executive Power and the mainstream media spun a major “fake news” about Russian meddling in Romania last year. Was it all a Romanian–European inside job? Interview with Elena Lasconi. pic.twitter.com/8X48xGD4vi— Stéphane Luçon (@sfglucon) December 2, 2025
Luçon is a French journalist, filmmaker, and editor specialising in Eastern European affairs, particularly Romania.
He serves as the director of the Romanian digital edition of Le Monde diplomatique, launched in 2024.
Earlier, Lasconi, whose political group is part of Renew Europe in the European Parliament, had given a similar interview on Digi24.
In addition to stating she did not see any Russian interference, she cast doubt on current President Nicușor Dan.
“I have a certainty that the current president has a clear connection with a pro-Russian… funding coming from I don’t know what channel, Belarus …
“I don’t know if Nicuşor Dan is a legitimately elected president, I’m not interested,” Lasconi said.
She said Nicușor Dan is “the candidate of the System, because they have him in hand with something, I don’t know what. [They] wanted him because you can’t control me.”
Dan said in his own interview in November that he has gathered a lot of material on the Georgescu case.
“Russian interference is much better documented,” he claimed.
“It was one of the promises I made during the campaign — that we would clarify what happened [the] November – December elections. I have collected a lot of material on several levels, including Mr Georgescu’s biography, including what, during the elections, were somewhat suspicious, and in the meantime we have documented Russian interference much better.
“So, at the right moment, we will come out with a synthesis of all the materials,” Dan said.
“We have reports from many European countries with very solid intelligence services that say there is a systematic manipulation and disinformation phenomenon by Russia in Europe.
“We have many examples of both cyber actions and manipulation and disinformation actions,” he continued.
Dan said that “the decision of the Constitutional Court and the conclusion of the CSAT were perfectly justified”.
Any solid proof, though, has not yet been shared with the public.
COMMENT: The documents relied upon to annul Romania’s presidential election first round provide no concrete evidence of Russian state interference or any links between presidential candidate Calin Georgescu and Russia, writes @GElefteriu. https://t.co/AMkt8cxIEp
