Hundreds of Iranians gathered today in Schuman, Brussels, to express solidarity with the widespread protests currently taking place in Iran.

Despite heavy rain, demonstrators got together and chanted slogans calling for the fall of the regime, voicing support for protesters back home.

“Freedom for Iran. No Shah, no Mullah,” could be heard repeatedly from the crowd.

Speaking to Brussels Signal at the rally, Shanin Godabi and Afchine Alavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran said they were confident the Iranian regime would fall.

“A new era has begun in Iran. The regime is doomed to be overthrown. There’s no way to go back,” Godabi said today.

Referring to remarks made earlier by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Godabi added: “When he says, ‘We will not give up so easily,’ these are the words of a system that feels its end is approaching.”

While protests in Iran are not new, the current uprising is unprecedented, according to Alavi.

“In the past, there were no liberated cities, even temporarily,” he said. “The scale of clashes in so many cities marks a major shift,” he added.

Godabi also emphasised that regime change must come from within.

“Overthrowing the regime is the task of the Iranian people and the organised resistance,” he said, rejecting the need for foreign military intervention, including from the US.

The comments come after US President Donald Trump warned on January 4 on his Truth Social platform that if Iran “violently kills peaceful protesters”, the US “will come to their rescue. ”

“We are locked and loaded and ready to go,” he insisted.

Reports show that more than 30 protesters have been killed by Iranian authorities in the recent domestic protests.

US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), said protests have spread to more than 100 locations across 22 of Iran’s 31 provinces.

The uprising has entered its 13th day, with demonstrations reported in 175 cities nationwide.

Iranian authorities blocked internet access and international telephone calls in an effort to isolate the country’s population of 85 million.

The representatives of the National Council of Resistance of Iran stressed the European Union should move beyond just statements expressing support and solidarity.

It should “formally recognise the right of Iranians and the organised resistance to overthrow the regime themselves, including through confrontation with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps”, they said.
