As Donald Trump is elected 47th President of the United States, Brussels-based Republicans Overseas member Aleksander Pruitt said the victory would mean more “transparency” for the European Union.
“We will hear the quiet part out loud. So all the conversations the US has within Europe rather than behind closed doors will be aired publicly” he told Brussels Signal on November 5.
EU-US relations were set to change under Trump, according to Pruitt, who is also assistant to MEP Charlie Weimers of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament.
“It may involve renegotiating trade, Europe spending more on defence so they can stand up for themselves,” Pruitt added.
He insisted that the doomsday scenario pushed by EU Eurocrats would not happen.
“I don’t think it means the end of NATO and I don’t think it’s going to mean the end of trade with the US,” he said.
Pruitt said he believed Trump could help the right-wing movement globally on key issues such as freedom of speech.
“A shared Conservative agenda is possible, we do agree on free speech. We are having issues in America with the Left trying to restrict free speech, targeting local opponents. The same thing happens in Brazil and in Europe” he said, adding: “Free speech is under attack.”
“We certainly work together and stand up for our citizens’ freedom,” he added.
