EP’s Sovereigntists ‘will protect European identity and fight EU Green Deal’

The Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) group in the European Parliament will work to protect “European identity” and fight to roll back the Green Deal, leaks from the group’s constitution show.

A draft of the group’s new Statutes document seen by Brussels Signal on July 15 revealed that it plans to focus on pulling powers away from Brussels while maintaining close co-operation between European Union Member States.

As part of this, the group has vowed to fight against what it sees as the various EU-backed elements currently eroding Europe’s various national identities.

“European civilisation is in peril,” the document read.

“Misguided policies, globalist agendas, wokeist ideologies and passivity towards the intrusion of political Islam are destined to deprive the peoples of Europe of the only place in the world they have to call home.

“We are determined to never let that happen. Rooted in Greco-Roman as well as our biblical traditions and the achievements of science, we are committed to the preservation of our European cultures and their native identities,” it added.

The document emphasised that the group did not want to dismantle the co-operative frameworks built by the EU but instead move away from a Brussels-centric approach to politics.

“We advocate the maintenance of a common market but seek to reduce bureaucracy and firmly oppose the building of a European unitary state,” it stated, adding that pro-EU politicians had frequently used “international crises”, the Green Deal and “LGBTQ and diversity agendas” to centralise power.

“We want to roll back the Green Deal and its planned economy in favour of market principles, enterprise and scientific progress. Notably, a safe supply of affordable energy is indispensable for the competitive ability and success of the European economies,” it read.

The group also lashed out at the EU’s migration policy, describing it as an “existential threat” to the continent.

“Uncontrolled mass immigration reshapes our homelands in disastrous ways. We consider this migration to be an existential threat to the European nations. Nothing but cooperation at the European level will enable us to effectively protect our external borders — to create a true fortress Europe — and stop the inflow of illegal immigrants into our countries,” the document said.

It said the ESN platform was encapsulated by the motto: “Projecting unity and strength abroad, advancing national diversities within.”

It concluded: “[This is] our formal for co-operation in a Europe of Sovereign Nations.”
