Some 520 pages. That is the length of the final report of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, and its headings leave little room for interpretation. SARS-CoV-2 most likely emerged from a laboratory or research-related accident. There was no quantitative scientific support for the two-metre distancing rule. Masks and mask mandates were ineffective at controlling the spread. Anti-scientific lockdowns caused more harm than good. The Biden administration used undemocratic and probably unconstitutional methods to fight what it regarded as disinformation.
On that report rests the official page the White House has maintained since April 2025, which treats the origin of the virus as settled and does so on the strength of five claims. They are worth taking one at a time, because two remain scientifically disputed, two are now supported by declassified intelligence and the fifth is not an argument at all but an observation.
The order of events is worth holding on to as well. Anyone who deletes federal records, commissions an article to discredit a hypothesis and presses the platforms to take it down is not arguing about science. He is building a narrative. That six years later the question of the origin still has no settled answer is not an accident. It is the result.
“A BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTIC NOT FOUND IN NATURE”
This is the furin cleavage site, a short sequence in the spike protein that eases entry into cells. Precision matters, because the argument stands or falls on it. The motif appears in other branches of the viral family, and both MERS and two of the viruses that cause the common cold carry it.
What has no precedent is that this virus carries it. No other known SARS-related virus does, nobody has explained where it came from and the intermediate animal that would have carried it has never turned up. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) assessment of June 2023 records that coronavirus chimeras were created at the Wuhan institute through genetic engineering, using methods that make deliberate modifications hard to detect.

The second claim holds that every case descends from one introduction, unlike earlier outbreaks, which were caused by repeated jumps from animals. The most cited paper, published in Science in 2022, found two separately introduced lineages and read that pattern as proof of animal origin. Other statisticians have since argued that the data fit a single introduction better.
That is where the knot lies. The dispute turns on the early Wuhan cases and the samples from the Huanan market, a body of data selected and handed over by Beijing. The subcommittee itself concluded that the World Health Organisation (WHO) failed in its mission and gave way to pressure from the Chinese Communist Party. The argument is being settled over material that was never independent.
THE LABORATORY WASHINGTON PAID FOR
That Wuhan houses China’s foremost SARS research centre is disputed by nobody. And here the file stops being a matter of opinion, because the money came from American taxpayers.
The report established that the National Institutes of Health funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan institute, that EcoHealth Alliance facilitated it, breached the conditions of its grant, delivered the required report almost two years late and concealed a dangerous experiment. On January 17, 2025 the health department debarred the organisation and its president, Peter Daszak, for five years. He had been sacked 11 days earlier. The subcommittee also found that the justice department had empanelled a criminal grand jury to investigate the origin of the virus.
THE RESEARCHERS WHO FELL ILL IN AUTUMN 2019
The fourth claim states that staff at the institute fell ill with symptoms consistent with the virus before the outbreak was known. It comes from a state department fact sheet of January 2021 and was dismissed for years as propaganda.
It is no longer dismissed. The declassified ODNI assessment of June 2023 supports that conclusion, and adds that some researchers at the institute probably were not using adequate biosafety precautions before the pandemic. What still cannot be verified is everything else. In six years no independent investigator has entered that laboratory or seen its notebooks, and the WHO’s scientific advisory group acknowledged in 2025 that the origin remains unresolved because Beijing will not hand over the data.

This is not an argument, because absence of proof proves nothing, and no laboratory progenitor has turned up either. It is an observation: six years of searching without a finding.
The intelligence community remains divided and, apart from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which holds moderate confidence, works with low confidence. A National Intelligence Council memorandum of January 2025, declassified in June 2026, shows that it was preparing a panel of outside experts. For those holding the papers, the question was still open.

And here is what the report proves without needing any virology. “The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2”, the article used for years to discredit the laboratory hypothesis, was prompted by Fauci to refute it, in the words of the official finding.
Meanwhile the traces were being wiped. Fauci’s senior adviser, David Morens, deleted federal records and used a personal email account to evade transparency law. Daszak gave false statements to Congress, as did Andrew Cuomo, according to a formal finding of the subcommittee. Nor did the untruths stop at the origin: Fauci testified on the record that the two-metre rule “sort of just appeared” and that he could recall no evidence for masking children.
