‘Let’s buy California from Trump’ – Danes push back at Trump’s Greenland dream

A group of Danish citizens has launched an initiative to buy California from the US and transform it into a Danish territory as a response to US President Donald Trump’s expressed desire to buy Greenland.

Dubbed the “Denmarkification” campaign, the group aimed to raise $1 trillion (€970 billion) through crowdfunding in order to acquire the Golden State, with plans to instil it with traditional Danish values.

Its slogan? “Make California Great Again”— a clear nod to Trump’s catchphrase “Make America Great Again”.

According to the campaign’s website, the deal might actually appeal to Trump, given his well-documented disdain for California.

“Let’s be honest — Trump isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan. He’s called it the most ruined state in the Union and clashed with its leaders for years. We’re pretty sure he’d be willing to part with it for the right price,” its web page reads.

As part of the fundraising effort, donors can enjoy a variety of perks, ranging from a personal thank-you note to access allegedly their very own private beach in California, once it becomes part of Denmark.

This playful proposal comes after Trump’s repeated calls to purchase Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, which he has praised for its strategic location and mineral resources.

The President has even hinted that military or economic pressure could be used to secure the deal.

The website mocked his Greenland ambitions while pushing for donations.

According the UK’s Daily Mail on February 10, the campaign “to help Denmark buy California – because why not?” was started by Xavier Dutoit and its online petition had racked up some 200,000 signatures in a matter of hours.
