Enhanced security protection around French places of worship

Tensions in Iran are having repercussions far beyond the Middle East, prompting France to strengthen domestic security, particularly around synagogues, to prevent any disturbances to public order.

French President Emmanuel Macron in his speech yesterday called for an increase in internal security through the “Sentinelle” operation.

This measure deploys military personnel to patrol high-risk sites, including places of worship, alongside police, providing constant surveillance and rapid response to potential threats.

The move echoes earlier directives from interior minister Laurent Nunez, who had ordered heightened security around synagogues and Jewish schools during the Purim Jewish holiday this month.

A telegram from Nunez seen by AFP read:  “Given the ongoing international situation in the Middle East, I reiterate my instructions for vigilance and ask that enhanced security measures be applied immediately to places of worship and Israeli religious gatherings.”

The increased security comes amid concerns over possible reprisals in France following Israeli military actions in Iran.

Police officers, municipal authorities and Sentinelle soldiers alternate their presence around sensitive sites, conducting identity checks, monitoring suspicious activity and reporting any signs of foreign interference to intelligence services.

“Whenever there is a major international event, there can be repercussions in France,” said Major Woirgard, chief of the specialised field brigades at the Noisiel municipal police station.

“We are more attentive to what happens abroad and adapt our posture accordingly,” added his colleague Major Tomberet.

Synagogues have long been considered sensitive locations and are closely monitored to prevent threats. The combination of military and police presence aims to reassure communities and maintain safety during periods of international tension.

The French Government emphasises these measures are preventive and designed to protect citizens and religious communities.

With Sentinelle troops on patrol and vigilance increased nationwide, authorities say they are signalling that any attempt to disrupt public order will be met with swift action.
