The mayor of a Bucharest district has unveiled plans for a public park named after United States President Donald Trump, presenting the project on July 4 to coincide with the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Daniel Băluță, the mayor of District 4 in the Romanian capital, said the “Donald Trump Romanian-American Friendship Park” would celebrate shared values between the two countries.
The park is being built as a four-hectare extension of the existing Tudor Arghezi Park, in the south of Bucharest.
Băluță said his community could “become part of a global story of friendship and respect between nations”, according to remarks he posted on social media.
He said he hoped the site would grow into a lasting symbol of the friendship between Romania and the United States, and of mutual respect.
The mayor, a member of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (PSD), shared a set of images generated using artificial intelligence, offering a preview of the planned attractions.
The renders showed an entrance guarded by a large bald eagle, a replica of the White House and scenes evoking Las Vegas and Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
Other themed areas would be dedicated to space exploration and NASA as well as to American cinema, the mayor said.
The project has the backing of Paolo Zampolli, the US special envoy for global partnerships and a personal friend of Trump.
Băluță said the name had first emerged from a meeting with Zampolli and Darryl Nirenberg, the new US ambassador to Romania.
After the proposal to attach Trump’s name drew some criticism, District 4 authorities put the question to an online public vote.
More than 116,000 people took part in the ballot, held between May 18 and 25, which confirmed the original choice, according to Romanian media.
Local officials have also decided to name a nearby ice rink after Doru Tureanu, regarded as one of the greatest Romanian ice hockey players.
The naming forms part of a wider warming of ties between Bucharest and Washington under Trump.
The Trump Organization, run by the president’s sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr, announced plans last year for several developments in Romania, including a Trump Tower in the capital.
Bucharest has a long tradition of naming public spaces after foreign leaders, having previously honoured figures such as Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle.
An exact date for the park’s inauguration has not been announced, though local reports suggest the works could take around two years.
