Confidence in Macron drops to 13 per cent, lowest rating ever measured

2 minutes read

The four-point drop over the past month, and 11 points since August, pushes Macron below the previous historical floor for an incumbent Élysée occupant.

French President Emmanuel Macron has plunged to his lowest level of public confidence on record, with 13 per cent of citizens expressing trust in his leadership, according to the latest political barometer by pollster Elabe for Les Échos published on November 5.

The four-point drop over the past month, and 11 points since August, pushes Macron below the previous historical floor for an incumbent Élysée occupant, underscoring voter fatigue and institutional paralysis as France heads towards the final stretch of his second term.

According to Elabe’s findings, more than eight in 10 respondents (82 per cent) state that they do not trust the head of state to address France’s problems effectively, with 60 per cent registering “no confidence at all”.

The poll of 1,004 adults was conducted on November 3-4.

The erosion spans almost every demographic, hitting working-class households (11 per cent) and younger voters especially hard. Trust among 18 to 24-year-olds has fallen seven points to 18 per cent amid rising fuel prices and recurring union mobilisations over purchasing power, as well as protests by secondary-school pupils.

Confidence holds up best among managers (25 per cent), although it has also fallen there, by three points.

The slump also breaks the previous record low of 14 per cent set by former Socialist president François Hollande in November 2016, as well as Macron’s own previous low of 14 per cent in October 2025. Weeks after his 2016 low, on December 1, Hollande announced he would not seek re-election.

The political fallout extends across the executive. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has likewise seen confidence erode to 17 per cent, down two points and his lowest level so far, reflecting the government’s struggle to push through its austerity-tinged budget while facing a fractious National Assembly with no clear working majority.

Macron’s own base has shrunk too: 36 per cent of those who backed him in the first round in 2022 now trust him, down seven points.

Meanwhile, National Rally figures Jordan Bardella (33 per cent) and Marine Le Pen (35 per cent) continue to command the highest favourability ratings nationally, though Bardella has slipped to his lowest level since April 2024. This is cementing the sense of political transition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
