Patriots announce legal battle against EU cordon sanitaire

The Patriots for Europe group has announced that they will wage a new legal battle against the cordon sanitaire in the European Parliament.

Writing on X on October 1, the group said that their case at the European Court of Justice will seek to annul the decision by centrist and left-wing groups to exclude them from all committee chair and vice-chair positions, as well as other senior roles in the parliament.

Coordinated by the European People’s Party, the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), Renew, and a host of smaller left-wing political groups in the EP, the Patriots argue that the exclusion is “in violation [of] several articles of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament”.

“The Patriots are the third biggest group in the European Parliament, but contrary to much smaller groups have no vice-presidents nor Quaestors of the Parliament, and no chairs or vice-chairs of committees,” the statement read.

“The decision to automatically and systematically exclude Members of Parliament from any position of responsibility merely based on their political opinions and membership of the Patriots for Europe Group also violates several provisions of inter alia the Article 10 of the Treaty on European Union and the Article 21 of the Charter on Fundamental Rights of the EU.”

“The Patriots for Europe Group wants that the results of democratically held elections in the Member States be reflected in all governing bodies of the European Parliament without any discrimination. No more, no less,” it added.
