George Simion, leader of Romania’s Alliance for the Union of Romanians party, says the decision to annul his country’s presidential election after the surprise first-round victory of outsider Călin Georgescu amounts to a “coup d’état”. The current regime is trying to cling to power by anti-democratic means and the response of the EU has been “shameful”, Mr. Simion, also a presidential candidate, tells Justin Stares. Romanians who protest are being arrested and there are moves to oust sympathetic MPs from the Romanian parliament, he says.
