British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, accepting his party’s verdict that he should not lead Labour into the next general election and setting in motion a contest to replace him.

In a statement outside Downing Street, Starmer said he accepted the decision “with good grace” after hearing the view of his parliamentary party. He confirmed he had informed King Charles III of his decision that morning.

He asked Labour’s National Executive Committee to open nominations on July 9 and said he would stay on as prime minister until the contest was complete, to ensure an orderly handover.

Should Andy Burnham stand unopposed, which appeared increasingly likely despite Wes Streeting’s earlier vow to run, he could take office in mid-July. A contested race would delay the handover until late August, before the House of Commons returns on September 1.

Starmer’s position had become untenable since June 18, when Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, won the Makerfield by-election in northwest England. He took 54.8 per cent of the vote, finishing more than 9,000 votes clear of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

Discontent had built for months, driven by a prolonged cost-of-living crisis, a string of policy U-turns and a collapse in Labour’s poll ratings since its landslide win in July 2024.

His authority was further drained by his appointment of Peter Mandelson, a friend of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as ambassador to the United States, and by ministerial resignations over defence spending.

The change at the top has unsettled European capitals and raised fresh questions over EU-UK relations, with Starmer having won praise abroad for rallying support for Ukraine and steadying markets during the recent Iran conflict.

US President Donald Trump added to the pressure a day earlier, declaring that Starmer “will resign” and blaming his exit on immigration and energy policy.
