The hypocrisy oozing from the European Quarter in Brussels has ceased to be mere political opportunism. It has degenerated into pure moral sickness.
On September 4, the European Commission issued a strict, theatrical condemnation regarding the honours paid to former Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladić, who died on August 27 in a UN prison hospital in The Hague. EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos went so far as to cancel an official visit to Belgrade, writing that “the glorification surrounding his death is incompatible with the values on which the EU path is built”.
Mladić was a convicted war criminal. No objective person seeks to deny his record. He was sentenced to life in 2017, and lost his appeal in 2021, for the genocide of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys at Srebrenica, the siege of Sarajevo and other war crimes. Yet the Islamists who Mladić fought against have since been all but sanctified by the mainstream narrative. And now, the sheer, nauseating double standard displayed by Ursula von der Leyen’s diplomatic corps reaches new heights of Pharisaism.
While Brussels mobilises its entire moral-policing mechanism to attack a dead man in his coffin, what is its posture towards active, living terror commanders? Total, shameless subservience.
On January 9, von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa flew to Damascus to roll out the red carpet for Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The European public is expected to forget that this newly assigned “partner” is Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the former leader of Jabhat al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda’s official branch in Syria. A man who once carried a $10 million US bounty on his head for terror operations.
Yet, von der Leyen stood in Damascus pledging some €620 million in European taxpayer funds for 2026 and 2027 to his regime under the guise of “recovery and reconstruction”.
The contrast is as grotesque as it is revealing. When a Christian general who fought during the Yugoslav collapse dies, European officials deliver fiery sermons from air-conditioned offices. But when a veteran jihadi warlord dons a Western suit and assumes power in Damascus, Brussels rushes to shower him with diplomatic legitimacy and hundreds of millions in funding.
This is not diplomacy. This is total ideological capitulation.
And now for the most inconvenient and important truth, one Brussels has worked tirelessly to erase: Mladić and the Bosnian Serb forces were not fighting in a vacuum. They were fighting against the very first armed, foreign-backed Islamist jihadists on modern European soil.
Mladić and the Bosnian Serb forces were defending Christians against the mujahideen brigades that flocked to Bosnia, committing decapitations and all kinds of monstrous atrocities, while flying the black banner of the holy war.
Decades later, the European Union has learned nothing and forgotten everything.
At home, the EU surrendered its internal security through open-border dogmatism, allowing millions of unvetted illegal migrants to enter European cities, bringing rising crime, radicalisation and societal fracture. Abroad, its foreign policy has collapsed into pure cowardice: Punishing sovereign European nations that dare to defend their national identity while bankrolling, courting and legitimising Islamist regimes in the Middle East.
Whoever dares to resist this civilisational decline, in other words, states defending their borders, conservative leaders demanding sovereignty or citizens demanding law and order, is immediately targeted by Brussels for prosecution, demonisation and financial bullying. Meanwhile, actual jihadists with blood on their hands receive European diplomatic delegations and financial packages.
The message sent by von der Leyen and her sad, historically finished circus is unmistakable: Fight for the defence and heritage of Europe, and you will be vilified for eternity. Take up arms under the banner of radical Islam, then put on a suit, and Brussels will write you a cheque.
This is not a Union defending European values, or Europeans themselves. It is an administrative regime projecting terminal weakness and decline, actively funding its own civilisational undoing.
So, if this is what has become of you, European Union, then get lost. For you do not deserve to survive anyway.
