For decades, the European political establishment has been invoking “democratic values” to preach moral superiority to the rest of the world. Yet on its own doorstep, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brussels actively oversees an autocracy so explicit that it would make a 19th-century imperial governor blush.
Consider the following grotesque reality: An unelected foreign bureaucrat can single-handedly rewrite criminal laws, suspend property legislation, cancel democratic votes, defund political parties and oust democratically elected national leaders.
This is not a hypothetical nightmare. It is not a historical reference to the Viceroy of India. It is the daily reality of the Office of the High Representative (OHR) in Sarajevo under Christian Schmidt, who stepped down on July 1.
The dam, though, is finally breaking. US Representative Celeste Maloy, a Utah Republican, on August 31 took the extraordinary step of requesting that the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) investigate Schmidt and his accomplices for sanctions under the Global Magnitsky program. Maloy’s charge is simple and incontrovertible: Schmidt has systematically interfered in democratic processes to overthrow Milorad Dodik, the elected president of Republika Srpska.
How did Schmidt execute this administrative coup? He ruled by decree. He invented criminal amendments out of thin air that made it a state-level crime to disobey his personal orders. When Dodik fulfilled his constitutional mandate by signing legislation passed by Republika Srpska’s elected parliament, laws Schmidt disapproved of, Schmidt had Dodik prosecuted under his custom-made decree and subsequently removed him from office.
This is not the rule of law. It is political tyranny disguised as international oversight.
The structural hypocrisy is breathtaking. For decades, the European Commission has dismissed the political disenfranchisement and suffering of Bosnian Serbs. At the same time, Europe is glorifying Syrian jihadists in Damascus. For some reason, Brussels shows an insatiable appetite for demonising traditional European Christians while courting Islamic radicals.
The OHR’s track record in Bosnia exposes this civilisational and religious bias. Expanding its mandate under some unratified diktat, the OHR has removed over 200 elected officials, almost exclusively targeting Orthodox Serbs and Catholic Croats. It has methodically sabotaged Christian communities, dismantled regional self-governance and systematically favoured Muslim Bosniak interests.
When Christian leaders in the Balkans fight for national self-determination, traditional heritage and border integrity, Brussels brands them “extremists”. Yet, when actual Islamist forces operate across the region, European diplomats offer appeasement.
The ongoing diplomatic tussle over Schmidt’s successor proves that Western elites remain addicted to this status quo. France, Germany and the United Kingdom are pushing French diplomat René Troccaz, a candidate whose past sympathies toward Islamist movements have alarmed the region’s Christian populations. Meanwhile, Washington and Rome back former ambassador Antonio Zanardi Landi, recognising that the current state of affairs is unsustainable.
The original 1995 Dayton Accords were intended to end a bloody civil war, not to construct a permanent colonial dictatorship where unaccountable bureaucrats overrule sovereign electorates. Thirty years on, Dayton’s fat bureaucracy has delivered economic paralysis, deepened ethnic friction and entrenched foreign rule.
It is time to call Schmidt’s regime what it is: An illegal, anti-democratic protectorate that systematically persecutes European Christians. Maloy’s demand for sanctions against Schmidt is not merely justified. It is a long-overdue reality check.
If Brussels genuinely believes in democracy, sovereignty and self-determination, it must dismantle the Office of the High Representative immediately. Europe cannot preach liberty to the world while maintaining a colonial vassal state in its own backyard.
