Left-wing progressivism is a political ideology structurally detached from reality. This fundamental factor causes its heralds to frequently shoot themselves in the foot by cheerleading narratives and individuals of very dubious integrity and, concomitantly, reliability.
The latest case is that of Jason Arday, the academic who resigned from the University of Cambridge on August 5, 2026 following multiple accusations of plagiarism and overall personal misrepresentation, which he denied. He was found dead at his London home on August 14, 2026.
An ethnic minority savant triumphing in one of the UK’s most establishment institutions was simply too irresistible for elite progressives. Arday was a bandwagon that the entire Left joined and bullhorned with gusto, transforming him into a poster boy of the multicultural, deracinated vision of Britain that progressive civic nationalists wanted to promote.
Unfortunately for them, reality has a way of slippering back eventually. Far from the leftist Thomas Sowell, Arday turned out to be just another minority conman attesting to the veracity of stereotypical statistics on the matter:
“Most offenders were male. Over half (52 per cent) of the offenders were aged 18-30, many of whom who adopted more peripheral roles in the fraud offence, and one in five were aged over 45. The majority of offenders (80 per cent) were British nationals. The ethnic backgrounds of the offenders were more mixed, with individuals from Black and minority ethnic groups over-represented.” (The Police Foundation, Understanding the Characteristics of Serious Fraud Offending in the UK, 2023).
Race hoaxes have become something of a standard in academia and journalism, in fact. In the post-Brexit hysteria, a slew of “hate crime” spikes were reported by the UK mainstream media, only for the whole affair to be disproven and swept under the rug soon after.
In parallel, in the America of 2016, where Donald Trump had just been elected, such an event had supposedly triggered a wave of bigoted attacks from the “right-wing”. In actuality, the moral panic and Trump Derangement Syndrome had only encouraged febrile leftists to enact the most bizarre and ludicrous simulations of racism, a trend that would eventually lead to the recording of the phenomenon in a vast database of left-wing lunacy and mendaciousness.
But the progressive thirst for spokespersons who will authoritatively validate their unfounded world view is not new. In the Portugal of the Troika years, when the Iberian nation was reeling from a financial crisis caused by a socialist government and all the statistics pointed to gross socialist mismanagement, as well as personal corruption scandals that would later put a former prime minister in pre-trial detention, a voice finally answered the call for left-wing moral superiority.
In late 2012, Artur Baptista da Silva became a star of the intellectual Left and was interviewed by all the mainstream media channels and newspapers, also giving speeches at elite think-tanks.
In his purported capacity as an economist, professor at Milton Wisconsin University and coordinator of the UN Development Programme’s Observatory for Southern Europe, Baptista da Silva spoke with institutional gravitas and was a critic of the austerity measures being implemented by the centre-right government in Lisbon, forced to follow the instructions of the Troika – the European Commission, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
There was only one problem: The man was a fraud and his CV was entirely forged, leading to one of the biggest humiliations for the country’s establishment media and arguably the beginning of its downfall.
Most elite institutions in the West are rapidly eroding their reputations for excellence, with Cambridge in particular gaining a bad reputation as a den of progressive dogma and lacking in scientific standards. It was no coincidence that the Cambridge Five affair took place there.
If the Left’s dominion of education and higher education is not reversed, there will come the day when the best engineers, doctors and scholars will no longer be produced in the Atlantic rim but will come from Asia instead. Who would trust institutions that hire based on ideological zealotry rather than merit?
The same trend can be attested by choice of political representatives. As Milton Friedman famously put it in a 1975 interview: “One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results.”
Leftists are rarely consistent in their political choices and when left-wing policies produce bad outcomes, rather than accepting their error and changing their vote, they often indulge in conspiracy theory.
Just as Cuban and Venezuelan economic disasters were excused with American sanctions, so too today the catastrophic results of mass third-world immigration will be blamed on intolerance and racism, as if the West were not one of the most open and tolerant civilisations on the planet.
By the same logic, when the fanatical and horrifying trend of sexualising children and gaslighting them into gender dysphoria ends in electoral backlash for the Left, the blame will be assigned to intolerance and transphobia rather than to the creepy and extremist mutilations and suicides that such a weaponisation of schools and children led to.
The downfall of Jason Arday should be a wake-up call to the entirety of Western academia and should produce drastic changes in policy. Administrators responsible for woke policies should resign and conservative academics be brought in to restore their reputation for excellence.
Failure to do that will not only be bad for the leftist narrative but it will systemically damage our institutions as well.
It is ironic that the ideology that claims a monopoly on science is actually the greatest purveyor of denialism … of factual reality. The sceptics of human dimorphism, the Luddites of the law of supply and demand, the negationists of cultural diversity are the progressives.
Their crusade against reality and quest for uniformity will always end in dystopian disasters that are quickly memory-holed for the benefit of the Party. This instance cannot be allowed to join that trend.
