German security service unexpectedly suspends ‘extremist’ classification of AfD

German intelligence agency the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has temporarily suspended its May 2 decision to classify the populist Alternative for Germany party (AfD) as “definitley right-wing extremist”. On May 8, the BfV sent a so-called "standstill commitment" to the Administrative Court of Cologne. AfD had filed a suit with the court on May 5.
